French phonetics and phonology: Introduction

Abstract

French has long figured prominently in the development of linguistic theory. To be sure, the familiarity of a language so widely studied in schools throughout the world commends it to a broad range of scholars. However, the significance of French with respect to recent work in phonetics and phonology cannot be accounted for by the language's popularity alone. Thanks to liaison phenomena, the status of schwa, and the idiosyncracies of French rhythm, to mention only three areas explored by contributors to this volume, the language has proved a potent stimulant to inquiry and debate. Moreover, the special place of French in the Romance family means that one can follow its development over the centuries from Latin to the modern tongue. As a result, wherever diachronic perspective is crucial, the facts of French simply have to be reckoned with.
