“…Our results may be useful for practitioners (owners, regulatory boards, financial control authorities, public authorities) to better understand the strategy possible in a specific context and the risks associated with some strategies. This could be relevant to manage risks more efficiently in a league that has suffered from negative economic shocks and has been massively helped by public authorities which is not sustainable (Carin and Terrien, 2021; Dufau et al ., 2022). Thus, we have identified recurrence in strategic schemes, which can also indicate strategic frontiers linked to resource dependency that allow some clubs to be more flexible than others to adopt new strategies.…”

“…In this regard, football clubs can be of particular interest considering the structural losses observed in the sector to explore the strategic responses set up to manage different types of dependencies (shareholders and the transfer market) and the increasing importance of players' sales as an economic resource (Neri et al, 2023). Management research can complement the economic approach of sports leagues by taking into account the diversity of their governance (Dufau et al, 2022;Rohde and Breuer, 2017), the relative plasticity of such organisations leading to strategic adaptation (Terrien et al, 2017) or their degree of cooperation (Feuillet et al, 2021). We consider our research object of football clubs as more complex strategic entities than usually presented.…”

“…An example of this is the Olympic gold medal won at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2006 by the athlete Carolina Marín. This reputation has made it possible to attract sportsmen and women to Spain, and the country is considered a venue for international events, within the framework of the traditional "trickle-down effect" that can generate the sporting success of a country at a given moment, such as that observed by the victory of the French team in the 2018 Men's Football World Cup [36].…”

“…The literature identifies two sources of clubs' financial troubles and bankruptcies [4]. Exogenous factors provide a first explanation [5][6][7]: clubs are submitted to productivity (a significant gap between actual and expected sporting performance) and demand shocks (an important revenue gap).…”
