Freischutz digital: A multimodal scenario for informed music processing

Abstract: In the last decade there has been an explosion in the availability of digitized music material, which comprises data of various formats and modalities including textual, symbolic, acoustic and visual representations. For example, in the case of an opera there typically exist digitized versions of the libretto, different editions of the musical score, as well as a large number of performances given as audio and video recordings. In this paper, we give an overview of various informed approaches to music processi… Show more

“…However, we also see that 2 We want to thank Elias Kokkinis who has provided the code for his algorithm and a parameter setting specifically tuned for this recording. 3 The recording is an excerpt of the opera "Der Freischütz" recorded by the project Freischütz Digital (www.freischuetz-digital.de) [16]. the different versions of KAMIR perform favorably as well, especially when the model benefits from several microphones for one voice signal.…”

“…Music is widely considered a universal language and there are many previous discussions on music representations (Dannenberg 1993;Wiggins, Müllensiefen, and Pearce 2010;Müller et al 2013). The relationship between music notation (score) and actual sound is similar to the one between text and speech.…”

“…As noted, music information can reach beyond isolated audio and thus can be more appropriately modeled as multimodal information streams, including combinations of audio, video, images, music scores, text, and gestures. [2][3][4][5][6] Analyzing, describing, and indexing this information presents considerable research challenges: frequently, information that is salient or meaningful to humans is not trivially extracted from the signals.…”
