Freeze-thaw and shore platform development in Gaspé, Québec

Abstract: The role of freeze-thaw action in coastal environments, with particular reference to the formation of sub-horizontal shore platforms in Gaspé, Québec, was investigated experimentally. Rock cores and crushed rock samples were subjected to: two freeze-thaw cycles of twelve and twenty-four hour durations; fresh water and three artificial sea water solutions of about half, one and a half, and 'normal' salinity; and two drainage conditions representing rock pools and vertical well drained surfaces. These variables … Show more

“…From an investigation in the laboratory and in the fi eld, Trenhaile and Rudakas (1981) concluded that frost operated effectively on the shore platforms of Gaspé, Québec, particularly in the lower portions of the cliff and on the platform in the upper intertidal zone. Trenhaile and Mercan's (1984) laboratory and fi eld data from Gaspé and the Bay of Fundy suggested that saturation levels in sea water may be too low for effective frost action in the higher portions of the intertidal zone, although critical levels can be attained through The number in parentheses refers to the number of stations in each category.…”

“…Frost shattering has some influence on shore platform erosion; it is controlled by the ambient temperature and modulated by tide buffering (Harris and Ralph, ; Trenhaile and Rudakas, ; Robinson and Jerwood, , ). Frost shattering is a generic term used to describe the brecciation effect of frost on a rock surface.…”

“…The operation of freeze-thaw weathering in seawater has been examined (e.g. Trenhaile and Rudakas, 1981;Robinson and Jerwood, 1987), but where tidal patterns have been simulated in the laboratory rock temperatures are not typically recorded (e.g. Trenhaile and Mercan, 1984) or freshwater has been used to control for the presence of salts in slaking experiments (e.g.…”
