Freeze dried extracts of Bidens biternata (Lour.) Merr. and Sheriff. show significant antidiarrheal activity in in-vivo models of diarrhea

Abstract: The freeze dried extract of B. biternata possess significant antidiarrheal activity in both in vitro and in vivo models which appears to be mediated by modulating both the intestinal motility as well as the secretory activity. The results of this study also validate its traditional use as an antidiarrheal remedy.

“…Anti-diarrheal activity was investigated according to the method described by Zavala-Mendoza et al (2013) , Wang et al (2015) , Wang et al (2016) , and Kinuthia et al (2016) , and Balb/C mice were randomly divided into six groups (10 animals per group). Three doses of DHP (1000, 500, and 250 mg/kg) were orally administered to each mouse; the model group received normal saline (10 ml/kg) and the positive group received diphenoxylate (5 mg/kg).…”

“…This test was carried out according to the method described by Kinuthia et al (2016) . Briefly, 30 min after oral administration of DHP (1000, 500, and 250 mg/kg), normal saline (10 ml/kg), or diphenoxylate (5 mg/kg) to mice, a 10% suspension of charcoal meal (0.1 ml/10 g weight) was administered to each mouse by intragastric gavage.…”

“…Normal jejunal activity was first recorded for 2 min prior to the addition of a given blocker. The extract was added 15 min after the addition of either 10 µM methylene blue or 100 µM L G -NAME (Chda et al, 2016) or 2 min after the addition of 1 µM propranolol (Kinuthia et al, 2016) followed by a 3 min record of jejunal activity before washing out.…”

“…The reduction in intestinal motility would potentially allow more time for intestinal fluid and electrolyte reabsorption thereby attenuating fluid losses and the faecal output (Kinuthia et al , 2016). Clinically, diarrhoea can arise from disturbed bowel function, due to impaired intestinal absorption, excessive intestinal secretion of water and electrolytes and rapid bowel transit (Tadesse et al , 2014).…”
