Freeze-casting applied to ceramic materials: a short review of the influence of processing parameters

Abstract: In recent years there is a high interest in the freeze-casting process because it is a simple, economical, and environmentally friendly method for obtaining highly porous materials. Most of the materials obtained by this technique have directional pore structure and anisotropic properties. However, a wide range of pore size and morphology can be obtained by the control of processing parameters, such as solvent type, solids concentration, particle size, freezing rate, and types of additives. The varied morpholo… Show more

“…The volume average particle diameter D (4,3) is 1.02 µm. The particle size distribution ranges from 0 to 5 µm, which meets the requirements for micron‐sized powders, 40 which is consistent with the SEM results. One of the major indicators describing the stability of a suspension system is the zeta potential ( ζ ) 32,41,42 .…”

“…Initially, a solid suspension is frozen. Later, the sublimation of the frozen solvent (by operating at low pressures) allows the formation of the porous structure [23]. In the sol-gel method, the natural compound (metal alkoxide) is dissolved in a solvent, and then the hydrolysis permits the formation of a monomer [24].…”
