Freeform Supertall Buildings

Abstract: To date, no research has been carried out in the literature that gives insight into the relationships between freeform and key design parameters in supertall towers (≥ 300 meters). This critical subject is investigated in this paper with data collected from 39 building cases, taking into account building function, load-bearing system, and structural material as design parameters. The key findings of the paper highlighted the following: (1) the only core typology was central core type; (2) mixed-use and office … Show more

“…Since a supertall building is feasible by the structure itself, the structural system is the most important design parameter, and many planning criteria depend on the structural system in terms of its performance (Ilgın, 2018). The selection of an optimal building structural system is also critical to improving building construction (Chakraborty et al, 2020;Zhong et al, 2022).…”

“…However, it has a great impact on the identity of the supertall building. In this paper, building form classification (Figure 3) is based on the 'main body' pattern [34,35].…”

“…The methodology employed in this study involved a case study approach to gather data on Asian supertall towers in order to examine space efficiency. This method is widely used in the assessment of built-environment projects, providing a means to collect both quantitative and qualitative data (Tulonen et al ., 2021; Saarinen et al ., 2022; Rinne et al ., 2022; Ilgın and Karjalainen, 2023). A total of 75 supertall cases from Asia were included in the analysis.…”
