Freeform fabrication and characterization of Zn‐air batteries

Abstract: Purpose-The paper's aim is to show the development of materials and methods which allow freeform fabrication of macroscopic Zn-air electrochemical batteries. Freedom of geometric design may allow for new possibilities in performance optimization. Design/methodology/approach-The authors have formulated battery materials which are compatible with solid freeform fabrication (SFF) while retaining electrochemical functionality. Using SFF processes, they have fabricated six Zn-air cylindrical batteries and quantitat… Show more

“…Taking as basis the primary zinc-air system, the zinc paste composition has been based on the formulation proposed by Malone et al [29]. In brief, it is constituted by 70.4 wt.% of zinc active material, 28.2 wt.% of alkaline electrolyte system, and 1.4 wt.% of Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as gelling agent.…”

“…If, in addition, the 3D machines are capable of printing active, multi-material components, this will enable the automatic integration of sensors, logic gates, actuators, and power sources into complex structures, rendering the prototyping process even more effective. 9,29,47 Due to the many unknowns, especially in the context of soft robotics, we also need powerful simulation tools so that ideas can be quickly tested before the systems are actually constructed in real hardware. In recent years, simulation methods that can be applied to robotics such as artificial evolution and physics-based modeling, have enormously improved (once again profiting from Moore's Law) and are now standard development tools.…”

“…On the other hand, gelling agent concentration in excess of 2 wt% might cause near solidification of the material. 104 In contrast, the binding agent is a polymer that provides mechanical stability and electrochemical properties. The polymeric binders are preferred to be nonreactive towards Zn, like soft vinyl polymers, acrylates, or elastomers.…”
