Freedom of fun, freedom of interaction

Abstract: The modernist tradition still drives our society and our scientific endeavors. Modernity stood for technology push, progress through industry, linearity, money, the abstract, and the logical. But it has resulted in a feeling of uneasiness, even coldness. That is why, we think, there is now such a drive to get human and societal values back in the equation: Think of human-centered engineering, the experience economy, funology, and the like. In this article we give an example of the direction interaction-design … Show more

“…Firstly, this turn to embodied interaction can get human and social values back in balance. After the modernist tradition with its technology push and its passion for the logical, we now enter an era that shows respect for a person as a whole (with a mind, heart and body) and exploits all his skills [11]. Moreover, technology influences our culture and people's everyday lives, and embodiment can help to shape people's engagement with reality [12].…”

“…4) Finally, from the observations during the experiment, we noticed a wide diversity in interaction styles with our TEI. Diversity in interaction styles is considered as a positive aspect of tangible interaction, in [7,39] Wensveen et al elaborate that "freedom of interaction is based on the exploitation of a range of perceptual-motor skills by offering the user myriad ways to reach the product's functionality". We anticipated a wide range in interaction styles, and our sensors were set to allow this.…”

“…TEI is considered as more natural and to be preferred over a cognition driven approach, associated with personal computing paradigms [3,4,5]. Tangibles are linked to affective interaction [6,7]. TEI stimulates social interaction and sharing [8,9].…”

“…They explored several design tools and techniques for supporting designers towards the investigation and reflection of gestures and tangible interactions, among other paradigms. Wensveen et al [35] explored perceptual-motor skills, and the relationship between mood and interaction and found that indeed interaction patterns may communicate meaning and emotions. Schiphorst et al [24], inspired by interactive artworks, focused on the interaction with multi-touch tabletop artworks, and investigated materiality and the semantics of caress, i.e., "the different meanings encoded in touch and gestures".…”
