Free volume change of elongated polyethylene films studied using a positron probe microanalyzer

Abstract: Free volume change of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) films upon mechanical deformation was microscopically investigated by positron probe microanalysis (PPMA). The ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetimes were gradually shortened by uniaxial deformation, indicative of shrinkage of the free volume. The o-Ps intensity for HDPE increased by deformation, whereas that for LDPE varied little. It suggests that destruction of crystallites plays an important role in the deformation of HD… Show more

“…Diffusion and reactivity of low-MW molecules/radicals in polymers is of considerable importance. It is related to the properties of polymeric membranes, (photo)degradation of polymers, permeability, and reactivity of free radicals in polymers. Obviously, polymers are complex media and their molecular structure and molecular mobility in polymers require a special study. Stable nitroxyl radicals have been used for decades as molecular probes of polymers. , ESR spectra of nitroxyls in polymers usually give info on a rotational diffusion of a low MW compound in a polymer.…”

“…Mono-energetic positron beams are uniquely used for a wide variety of experiments in solid state physics and material science, such as obtaining spatially resolved maps of plastically deformed or irradiated metals [1][2][3][4], non-destructive investigation of thin layers [5], and observing the annealing behavior of defects or free volumes in polymers [6]. In addition, they can be used for studying the Fermi surface and the topmost atomic layers of materials [7].…”
