Free-Standing Thin Films Containing Hexagonally Organized Silver Nanocrystals in a Polymer Matrix

Abstract: The successful preparation of novel thin nanocomposite films containing continuous periodic arrays of self‐assembled silver nanocrystals in a polystyrene (PS) matrix is reported in this communication. The Figure shows a photo of a thin nanocomposite Ag–PS film supported by a wire loop. The simple and rapid synthetic procedure described here should be applicable to a variety of metal or semiconductor–polymer nanocomposite systems.

“…Several approaches to the fabrication and isolation of freestanding or suspended polymer thin films have been reported, including methods such as Langmuir-Blodgett deposition,1,12 spin-coating or casting of polymer films,13 and layer-by-layer assembly 11,14. Films assembled using these methods can then be delaminated, lifted off, or peeled from the surfaces on which they are fabricated using a variety of techniques, and subsequently manipulated as a completely freestanding (i.e., unsupported) film or as a partially supported (i.e., suspended) membrane drawn over the opening of a porous substrate.…”

“…Mechanically robust, free-standing, compliant membranes have been synthesized by crosslinking amphiphilic Langmuir [13,14] and cast films. [15] Recently, there have also been reports on the fabrication of a freely suspended membrane using conventional layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly (widely used for a variety of materials) [16±21] combined with sacrificial or pH-sensitive substrates. [22,23] However, all these approaches are very time-consuming, with the sample preparation taking several hours (even days) and requiring multiple stages.…”

“…The ex-situ method consists in dispersing dry silver nanoparticles produced beforehand by an appropriated chemical process into a polymer medium to generate highly ordered periodic arrays of nanoparticles. [31] In the in-situ method, metal nanoparticles are generated directly in the matrix through chemical reduction of a cationic precursor previously dissolved in the bulk. [24] Photochemical reduction by irradiating a dye sensitizer in the presence of silver ions also provides a convenient way to produce embedded nanoparticles in polymer.…”
