Free Radical Scavenging and In vitro Cytotoxic Activity of Bugnay (Antidesma bunius) Leaves Extract against A549 Human Lung Adenocarcinoma and HCT-116 Human Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines

Abstract: Cancer is one of the significant causes of mortality worldwide. Studies on antineoplastic drugs focused on natural products have revealed several mechanisms to inhibit cancer cells. Bugnay (Antidesma bunius) leaves showed potentials due to its activity observed against brine shrimp and breast cancer cells. However, there is still limited knowledge about its activity against other human cancer cells. This study focused on determining the phytochemical compounds in A. bunius leaves extract, the free radical scav… Show more

“…However, this strain was repeatedly reported from marine sources, such as sediment samples (Wu et al, 2021), sponges, and deep-sea coral (Hu et al, 2022;Shin et al, 2016;Yao et al, 2021). Nemania bipapillata was recently reported as an endophyte of Vaccinium dunalianum Wight leaves along with P. capitalensis (Fan et al, 2020). It was also found in a mutualistic relationship with Diospyros crassiflora (Douanla-Meli and Langer, 2012).…”

“…It was also found in a mutualistic relationship with Diospyros crassiflora (Douanla-Meli and Langer, 2012). Meanwhile, an endophytic X. feejeensis was isolated previously from various host plants, such as an Euphorbiaceae plant, Sapium macrocarpum (García-Méndez et al, 2016), and from medicinal plants Hintonia latiflora (Rivera-Chávez et al, 2015) and Eryngium foetidum (Siriwach et al, 2011). The genus Phyllosticta is known to inhabit a wide host range (Zhu et al, 2021).…”

“…In our study, saponins were detected in aqueous/methanol extract. Geronimo et al ( 42 ) showed that the saponins inhibited the cellular growth of different cancer cell lines. Saponins and tannins possessed antitumor properties in MCF-7 and HCT-116 ( 42 ).…”

“…The bioactivity of A. bunius as anti-cancer is often associated with its activity as an antioxidant. The A. bunius leaf extract showed cytotoxic activity against human colorectal HCT-116 and human lung adenocarcinoma A549 (Geronimo et al, 2020). The A. bunius fruit secondary metabolites affect mitochondrial integrity and can modulate stress-responsive genes in cancer cells.…”
