Freak Wave Generation in a Wave Basin With HOSM-WG Method

Abstract: A method to produce freak waves with arbitrary spectrum in a fully directional wave basin is presented here. This is an extension of Waseda, Houtani and Tanizawa at OMAE 2013[1], which used “HOSM-WG” based on the higher-order spectral method (HOSM). We used the following three methods to improve the HOSM-WG in [1]: “separation of free waves from bound waves,” “using Biesel’s transfer function in wavenumber space” and “using Schaffer’s 2nd-order wave maker control method.” Modulational wave trains, freak waves … Show more

“…Taklo et al (2015) reported experiments and simulations, using the Zakharov (1968) equation, of unidirectional waves. For narrow-banded waves the experiments confirmed the numerical predictions by Gibson & Swan (2006), Krogstad & Trulsen (2010) and Houtani et al (2015). For broad-banded waves the experiments showed that the LDR was satisfied, suggesting validity of linear wave theory.…”

“…For unidirectional waves the deviation was observed experimentally and numerically by Taklo et al (2015) and numerically by Gibson & Swan (2006), Krogstad & Trulsen (2010) and Houtani et al (2015). The experiments of Taklo et al (2015) employed ǫ = 0.10 which is higher than ǫ = 0.04 of the MARIN wave fields.…”

“…The HOSM-WG (here WG stands for the wave generation) method developed in Ref. [6,7] was shown to be superior to the conventional wave generation when wave steepness increases, the frequency spectrum broadens or the directional spreading becomes large. Particular attention was paid to the generation of the freak waves.…”
