Framing, overflowing, and fuzzy logic in educational selection: Zurich as a case study

Abstract: Abstract. This paper uses the concepts of "framing and overflowing" (Callon, 1998) and "fuzzy logic" (Zadeh, 2015) to show the application and relevance of critically examining educational selection beyond the particular local context. It examines the empirical example of the central entrance examination procedure to grammar schools in the canton of Zurich. The main argument illuminates the widely neglected grey zones and the fuzzy logic lying at the heart of the selection machinery for higher education. This … Show more

“…This study seeks to shed light on this subject by combining insights from the digital platform literature with the concept of framing/overflowing (Callon 1998), which has been widely applied, inter alia in geography studies (e.g. Franz et al 2014;Bauer 2018;Higgings & Richards 2019). Callon's (1998) concept pair of framing (which he borrows from Goffman's (1974) frame analysis) and overflowing addresses the continuous process of defining and redefining markets.…”

“…Until now, hardly any research has examined the role of governance in baccalaureate school selection, and especially in entrance examinations. One exception is the study by Bauer [44], who identifies "grey zones and fuzzy logics" that are widely neglected by political actors in a canton where students are selected by entrance examination. The study indicates the contradictory and paradoxical logics of action in the selection procedure.…”
