FRAME and the Validation Process

Abstract: FRAME's historical involvement in the development of the principles of validation, whereby the reliability and relevance of a procedure are established for a specific purpose, and in the practical application of the process, is summarised, and examples of participation in various validation studies on in vitro tests are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the need for a parallel invalidation process, and on the role of ATLA as a forum for objective reporting and discussion on all aspects of the validation process.

“…Within a few months, we had raised sufficient funds from industry to support FRAME's first multi-centre laboratory research project, which led to the development of the Kenacid Blue cytotoxicity test (4), referred to above. We also received the first British Government grant specifically for research on replacement alternatives (5), which enabled us to set up the FRAME Alternative Test Validation Scheme (6,7).…”

“…Fourthly, Richard Clothier and I review the historical involvement of FRAME, as a research charity, in the development of the principles of validation -the process whereby the reliability and relevance of a procedure are established for a specific purpose -and summarise FRAME's role in the practical application of the process. 4 Emphasis is also placed on the need for a parallel invalidation process, and on the role of ATLA as a forum for objective reporting and discussion on all aspects of the validation process. FRAME's participation has also involved many collaborations, beginning with the establishment of the FRAME Research Programme and its funding by a consortium of industrial companies in 1982, followed, in 1983, by support from the British Government for one of the first international test validation schemes.…”
