“…A framing approach has proved an adequate methodological tool for analyzing how the media construct a meaningful, comprehensible reality for the audience, how they select and organize ideas for the public to interpret. Framing theory has been taken up by sociology (Gamson & Modigliani 1987, 1989, Goffman 1974, psychology (Bartlett 1932), linguistics and discourse studies (Lakoff & Johnson 1981, Tannen 1979, van Dijk 1977, economics (Ireri et al 2019, Kahneman & Tversky 1979, communication and media studies (Papacharissi & De Fatima Oliveira 2008, Tuchman 1978, Scheufele 1999, van Gorp 2005, 2007, political communication and policy studies (Entman 1993).…”

“…The missionaries and British settlers started the modern Kenyan press in the nineteenth century (Ochilo 1993), which explains why early publications carried religious materials (Obonyo 2003). The press in Kenya developed in four phases: the colonial era (1895–1962), the post-independence era (1963–1990), the multiparty era (1991–2000), and the digital media era (2002–present) (Ireri et al 2019).…”

“…An inductive process involves analyzing a news story with an open view, trying to reveal possible frames. The advantage of this study approach is that it guarantees no frame will go unnoticed (Ireri, 2019;Walker, Godley, & Nuno, 2019). However, it is time-consuming, challenging to replicate, and often dependent on a limited study.…”

“…Wood's (2019) content analysis of Canadian newspaper articles, for example, showed that frames that used economic prosperity and responsibility to portray the Keystone oil pipeline between the U.S. and Canada dominated over contents that framed the effects of the Keystone oil pipeline to health impacts and destructions of the environment. Similarly, in Kenya, research on the effects of framing on oil pollution shows that the Daily Nation and The Standard newspapers framed the effects of oil pollution in the country using attribution of responsibility, conflict, economic consequences, energy security, human interest, and environmental concerns to portray the rampant oil pollution ravaging their environment (Ireri, 2019). Supporting this point Ndinojuo (2020) examination of the effects of framing oil pollution and biodegradable issues in online newspapers showed that economic costs dominated coverage in The Punch and Premium Times, compared to the Daily Post and Leadership despite the destruction of the means of livelihood of oil-bearing communities due to oil exploration activities.…”
