Fragments of 1.79-1.75 Ga Large Igneous Provinces in reconstructing Columbia (Nuna): a Statherian supercontinent-superplume coupling?

Abstract: Supported on available paleomagnetic data, a new Columbia (Nuna) supercontinent reconstruction is proposed based on matching U-Pb-dated 1.79-1.75 Ga Large Igneous Province (LIP) mafic unit fragments and particularly on linking their dykes into radiating systems. Information from the literature is augmented with the herein dated 1762 Ma (U-Pb) Januária dyke swarm from the São Francisco Craton (Brazil). In this reconstruction, three major LIPs would be restored. The first one (1.79 Ga Hart-Carson LIP), would con… Show more

“…The geophysical maps used (Figures 3B and 3C) correspond to areas 5 and 18 produced by the Aerogeophysical Survey of the State of Minas Gerais, carried out by CODEMIG (2008CODEMIG ( /2009CODEMIG ( and 2010CODEMIG ( /2011, with a flight height of 100 meters and spacing of 500 meters. The positioning of the amplitudes resulting from the analytical signal (Figure 3B) reveals lineaments of high magnetic intensity related to mafic dykes (diabases) of NW-SE direction referring to the 1.76 Ga Januária swarm (Chaves & Correia Neves, 2005;Chaves & Rezende, 2019;Chaves et al 2021). The association of the Th-U-K ternary gammaspectrometric map with the shaded relief (Figure 3C) allows defining areas of high potassium mainly associated with drainages.…”

“…Based on the distribution of fragments of LIP of distinct ages, Chaves and Rezende (2019) have proposed a new reconstruction of Columbia (Nuna) supercontinent. This reconstruction is shown in Figure 10, where purple and green circles represent the thermal impact area promoted by 1.52 Ga and 1.38 Ga mantle plume activity, recorded by volcanic mafic dykes and sills (LIP fragments).…”

“…In Brazil, Palaeoproterozoic khondalite sequences occur in the São Francisco Craton (e.g., Itapecerica Supracrustal Sequence, Brejões Dome, and Tanque Novo‐Ipirá Complex), in the Borborema Province (e.g., Granja, Canindé do Ceará, and Jaguaretama complexes), and in the Brasília Belt (Ticunzal Formation) (Figure 1a,b) (Calado, Costa, Gomes, & Rodrigues, 2019; Cuadros, Botelho, Fuck, & Dantas, 2017; Fragomeni & Pereira, 2013; Miranda, Chaves, Dussin, & Porcher, 2020). The khondalitic rocks of the São Francisco Craton mark the locus of a segment of the Columbia Supercontinent Suture and palaeomagnetic reconstructions indicates its continuity in the North China Craton (Chaves, 2021; Chaves & Rezende, 2019; Miranda et al, 2020; Teixeira et al, 2017). In the Brasília Belt, the Ticunzal Fomation was deposited in a continental arc‐related basin between 2.16 and 2.19 Ga (Cuadros et al, 2017).…”
