Fragility Vertebral Compression Fractures in Postmenopausal Women: The Role of a Fracture Liaison Service Program

Abstract: Background As the aging population increases in the United States, so has the prevalence of osteoporosis (10.2 million adults aged 50 years and older in 2010). Programs to manage the increased incidence of fragility fractures in such patients particularly the postmenopausal women are the priority. Programs such as the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) might be the answer. Methods Data of 256 postmenopausal women with vertebral compression fractures treated with vertebroplasty between 2012 and 2017 were divided in… Show more

“…A prominent strategy to address this crisis has been the widespread adoption of FLS programs, which have proved effective in improving rates of osteoporosis management and reducing rates of secondary fragility fractures in certain studies 34 - 38 . However, such initiatives are not universally associated with improved outcomes 39 , 40 .…”

[ 3 , 4 ] At present, there are surgical and nonsurgical methods for the treatment of OVCF. nonoperative methods include taking painkillers, wearing back braces, and bed rest to improve functional status and preventing future fractures of other vertebral bodies.…”

“…Due to the social aging, the incident rate of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture has increased year by year with its insidious onset and low consultation rate seriously threatening the health of the elderly, which is more signi cant in postmenopausal women [1][2][3]. In view of the actual clinical problems, researches on OVCF have become urgent and necessary [4,5]. Patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures mainly feature low back pain and aggravated postural changes with spinal deformation, decreased cardiopulmonary function and gastrointestinal instabilityin severe cases, and even spinal nerve compression leading to paralysis and life-threatening conditions [6].…”
