Fragilidade de idosos internados na clínica médica da unidade de emergência de um hospital geral terciário

Abstract: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was aimed at classifying elderly patients admitted to the medical clinic of a tertiary hospital, according to socio-demographic variables, and identifying their frailty. Data collection was carried out in the period between October 2010 and March 2011, through a questionnaire with socio-demographic data and the Edmonton Frail Scale. Eightyfour elderly patients with an average age of 73.8 participated in the study; 60.7% were male, 44.0% married and 32.1% widowers/ wid… Show more

“…However, in studies using EFS, prevalence of fragility in the elderly who lived in the community was 39.1% in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo (11) and 41.3% in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais (6) , while in the elderly assisted by the Family Health Strategy in Embu, São Paulo, it was 30.1% (12) . Prevalence of frailty was 74.1% in the elderly of an institution of long permanence in Fortaleza, Ceará (13) ,while it was 95.2% in the elderly hospitalized in the Medical Clinic of the Emergency Department of a University Hospital of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo (14) . We observed that different conditions may influence the prevalence of frailty in the elderly.…”

“…While this finding agreed with the aforementioned studies, 19,31 there was no difference between FR and NF and between PF and NF individuals, suggesting that even elderly individuals not at risk of frailty may have a negative opinion of their health, or in other words, in this sample perception of health was not decisive for frailty and vice versa. This is possibly due to the low number of reports of poor (16.5%) or very poor (0.0%) health, categories which, according to Stori et al, 32 are determinants of frailty.…”

“…However, it is worthwhile to remember that educational level is a determinant factor for health condition, particularly in older adults. The literature points out that a low educational level relates to a greater chance of individuals presenting health problems and negatively impacts their functionality 15,20,21 . In sequence, a greater functional impairment is related to multiple comorbidities, and both are risk factors for frailty 20,21 .…”

In sequence, a greater functional impairment is related to multiple comorbidities, and both are risk factors for frailty 20,21 . On the other hand, still concerning the associations, age was mildly correlated, demonstrating that vulnerable individuals are older than the not-vulnerable ones, which confirms the fact that the older the age, the greater the difficulty in homeostasis maintenance, and the greater the susceptibility to harm 15 .…”
