El propósito de este artículo es exponer, con base en lo dicho por la propia autora en poemas y cartas, algunas de las posibles razones que condujeron a la poeta estadounidense Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) a no publicar en vida. Si bien Dickinson no expresó ideas protofeministas como muchas otras autoras de su tiempo lo hicieron, su vida y obra muestran que con frecuencia forcejeó con distintas instituciones patriarcales, dentro de las cuales se cuenta la institución literaria. Específicamente, aquí se revisan pasajes muy puntuales en las tres primeras cartas enviadas por la poeta al editor Thomas Wentworth Higginson en 1862. También se analiza “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” (M128, Fr260), uno de los poemas editados por Higginson y Mabel Loomis Todd para Poems, Second Series (1891). A partir de esto, se propone que la autora entendió que el “precio” que debía pagar para ver su obra publicada consistía en que ésta fuera sometida a procesos de normalización, principalmente formales, de acuerdo con los estándares editoriales de la época, en gran parte establecidos por una élite literaria masculina. En oposición a dichos estándares, la poesía de Dickinson respondía a lo que, a partir de algunas ideas de Northrop Frye, se denomina aquí precisión lírica y que consiste en un tratamiento de la forma poética que somete patrones predeterminados a los hallazgos rítmicos, afectivos, intelectuales, perceptuales, entre otros, del poema. Asimismo, se analiza el famoso poema “Publication – is the Auction” (M386, Fr788) para examinar uno de los comentarios más contundentes de Dickinson en relación con el precio de publicar y cómo el principio de precisión lírica se manifiesta en él.

"What News must think when pondering": Emily Dickinson, the Springfield Daily Republican , and the Poetics of Mass Communication

This essay explores the ways in which Dickinson's local newspaper, the Springfield Daily Republican , informs the subject and form of her poetry. From her daily reading, Dickinson responded to a variety of unusual and seemingly uninteresting components of the newspaper: from a mundane medical advertisement to routine stock and weather reports, and from the Republican 's frequent mission statements to its commentary on the developing technology of the telegraph. By considering the ways Dickinson's poetry addresses the Republican , in content as well as form, we can observe the ways the newspaper gave Dickinson occasion to contemplate the larger issue of the nature of mass communication. This article argues that, in poems such as "Would you like Summer? Taste of our's - " (Fr272), "Myself can read the Telegrams" (Fr1049), and "How News must feel when travelling" (Fr1379), Dickinson envisions mass communication as diminishing the importance of the individual by treating readers as an undefined mass and thus forcing the reader into a single, predefined role. In response to this unnatural homogenization, Dickinson's poems model the ways in which the individual, specifically the artist, can prosper in the era of mass communication by taking what is produced for an undefined vast readership and crafting individualized works of art.
