Fractures in Elderly Americans Associated With Walking Leashed Dogs

Abstract: Dog walking is often suggested as an effective modality for improving physical health in elderly Americans. 1 Nonetheless, injury risks associated with dog walking remain obscure. Considering that older patients are more vulnerable to fractures owing to falls or axial muscle compression forces inherent to walking motions, a risk-benefit analysis with respect to dog walking as an exercise alternative is essential to minimizing injury risk. 2 This study represents a comprehensive, up-todate investigation into fr… Show more

“…However, some other factors can also be considered for the risk of fractures. Moderate levels of activity, including walking, can be associated with a lower risk of hip fracture and leashed dog walking was suggested to be related with increased fractures [ 32 , 33 ]. Finally, it should be approached with caution when interpreting and applying our results clinically, and well-designed clinical trials are required to compensate for these limitations in the future.…”

“…The higher predicted probability of a high severity bite in older adults compared to adults in the current study is notable. In the older adult population, an association between fractures and walking dogs on leashes has recently been reported [53]. It is likely that situations leading to dog walkers suffering from fractures are the result of behavioural and/or obedience issues with the animal in question.…”

“…Various reliable, reproducible epidemiologic studies on injury-related ED visits have been published using this database. 10,11 Specific information pertaining to collection methodologies and quality control precautions are available on the CPSC webpage. 12 In this study we queried each yearly sample in the NEISS database between 2005-2019, both inclusive, for injuries classified as associated with the sport of wrestling (Product Code: 1,270 -"Wrestling (activity/apparel/equipment)").…”
