Fracture Union in Closed Interlocking Nail in Humeral Shaft Fractures

Abstract: Background:Fracture shaft humerus is a major cause of morbidity in patients with upper extremity injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of interlocking nail in humeral shaft fractures. Methods:This study was conducted in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in SMS and R Sharda University from January 2010 to November 2013. Seventy-eight patients were recruited from emergency and out-patient department having a close fracture of humerus shaft. All patients were operated under general anesthe… Show more

“…Moreover, Sahu et al [20] applied intramedullary locking nail to 78 patients with humerus shaft fractures and the time to fracture union was reported as mean 110 days (range 90 to 150 days). In another study, time to union was reported as mean 126 days (range 56 to 252 days).…”

“…Similar results were found in study conducted by Sahu RL et al, in which the average duration of PWB was 6 weeks and study by Raghavendra B et al, in which average time for PWB was 4 weeks. 8,14 The average duration of full weight bearing in femur fractures was 10.15 weeks and in tibia fractures was 12.65 weeks. Similar results were were found in study conducted by Al-Algawy-Alla AH, in which average duration of FWB was found out to be 13.2 weeks and study by Raghavendra B et al in which average time for FWB was 10.81 weeks.…”

“…Intramedullary nailing has shown some advantages in terms of biological fixation with preservation of blood supply 8 . Intramedullary nail is a load-sharing device and should be considered as the treatment of choice for pathological fractures as well 9 . There are two insertion possibilities of humeral intramedullary nails: antegrade insertion with entry point at the shoulder and retrograde insertion with entry point at the elbow, each associated with entry site morbidity 10 .…”
