Ceramic materials, as Alumina and Zirconia, has made an improvement in the choice of new biomaterials for the load bearing application in dental and orthopaedic implants. These materials has shown mechanical resistance to high stress related to weight bearing and low debris in time. For this reason they are indicated on young patients implant, with high demanding activities and long life expectance. In literature however the risk of chronic inflammation due to chronic wear debris release and the possibility of carcinogenesis, is still to be definitively investigated. Another point to investigate is the acute reaction of the tissue in case of acute release of powders of these materials. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible local and systemic acute effects of ceramic precursors in form of powders of different size when released into articular joint. Powders of ZTA were implanted in the knee joint of twenty-four New Zealand white adult rabbits, that were sacrificed at 1,3,6, and 12 months. Radiographic, histological and immunoistochemestry analysis were conducted on periprosthetic tissue and peripheral organs, to verifying local host response and systemic toxic effects.

The aim of this study was to prepare zirconia implants with laser-modified surfaces and to evaluate peri-implant tissue response and osseointegration in an animal study. The experimental zirconia implants received one of the following surface treatments and were placed in the tibiae of SD rats: vertical irradiation with a fiber laser (vertical fiber laser), horizontal irradiation with a fiber laser (horizontal fiber laser), vertical irradiation with a Neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (YVO4) laser (vertical YVO4 laser), and horizontal irradiation with a YVO4 laser (horizontal YVO4 laser). The control implants were smooth surfaced. Tibiae with implant bodies were collected 28 days after implant placement, and removal torque values were measured. Tissue sections were prepared for light microscopy, and the bone-implant contact (BIC) ratio and the peri-implant bone area (BA) were measured. The vertical fiber-laser implants had a mean BIC that was significantly higher than other implants. The mean BIC of the vertical fiber-laser implants was approximately 4.2 folds of the value of the control implants on the cortical bone side and approximately 2.7 folds of the value of the control implants on the bone marrow side. The mean BA was significantly higher in the vertical YVO4-laser implants. The vertical fiber-laser implants had a mean torque removal value that was approximately 2.4 folds of the value of the control implants and approximately double of the value of the vertical or horizontal YVO4-laser implants. The horizontal fiber-laser implants had a mean removal torque value that was approximately double of the value of the control implants and approximately 1.7 folds of the value of the vertical or horizontal YVO4-laser implants (p<0.05). Both types of lasers were useful in implant surface treatment to enhance osseointegration of zirconia implants.

Cyclic fatigue resistance of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals with hot isostatic press processing

This study investigated the influence of surface roughness and cyclic loading on fatigue resistance in Y-TZP subjected to hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Fifty Y-TZP cylinders 3.0 mm in diameter were divided into Group A (polished by centerless method; TZP-CP) or Group B (blasted and acid-etched: TZP-SB150E). Twenty five cp-titanium cylinders (Ti-SB150E) were used as a control. Static and cyclic tests were carried out according to ISO 14801. The cyclic fatigue test was performed in distilled water at 37°C. Surface morphology and roughness as well as crystal phase on the surfaces were also evaluated. Fracture force under the static test was 1,765N (TZP-CP), 1,220N (TZP-SB150E), and 850 N (yield force, Ti-SB150E). Fracture values under the cyclic test decreased to approximately 70% of those under the static tests. These results indicate that HIPed Y-TZP with a 3.0-mm diameter has sufficient durability for application to dental implants.
