Abstract.A criterion to predict crack onset at a sharp notch in homogeneous brittle materials has been presented in a previous paper of one of the authors. It is reviewed and improved herein. It fulfils both the energy and the strength criteria and takes an Irwin-like form involving the generalized intensity factor of the singularity governing the elastic behaviour in the vicinity of a notch tip. The prediction agrees fairly well with the experiments although it slightly underestimates the experimental measures. A cause of this discrepancy can be that a small notch tip radius blunts the sharp corner. It is analysed in this paper by means of matched asymptotics involving 2 small parameters: a micro-crack increment length and the notch tip radius. A correction is brought to the initial prediction and a better agreement is obtained with experiments on PMMA notched specimens. Experiments performed on a stiffer material (Alumina/Zirconia) show that it is less sensitive to small notch tip radii. A remaining small discrepancy between experiments and predictions can be due to some non linear behaviour of the materials near the notch tip. In addition, without new developments, the method allows to determine the stress intensity factor at the tip of a short crack emanating from a sharp or a rounded v-notch.

The interior stress problem is solved numerically for a single edge notched specimen under uniaxial load. The algorithm is based on a modification of a Fredholm second kind integral equation with compact operators due to Muskhelishvili. Several singular basis functions for each of the seven corners in the geometry enable high uniform resolution of the stress field with a modest number of discretization points. As a consequence, notch stress intensity factors can be computed directly from the solution. This is an improvement over other procedures where the stress field is not resolved in the corners and where notch stress intensity factors are computed in a roundabout way via a pathindependent integral. Numerical examples illustrate the superior stability and economy of the new scheme.

This paper presents seventy new experimental results from PMMA notched specimens tested under torsion at -60 °C. The notch root radius ranges from 0.025 to 7.0 mm. At this temperature the non-linear effects previously observed on specimens of the same material tested at room temperature strongly reduce.The averaged value of the strain energy density over a control volume is used to assess the critical loads to failure. The radius of the control volume and the critical strain energy density are evaluated a priori by using in combination the mode III critical stress intensity factor from cracked-like specimens and the critical stress to failure detected from semicircular notches with a large notch root radius.
