Fracture and Contact Adhesion Energies of Mica‐Mica, Silica‐Silica, and Mica‐Silica Interfaces in Dry and Moist Atmospheres

Abstract: A study i s made of the factors that contribute to the energy of mica-mica, silica-silica, and mica-silica interfaces in the presence of moist atmospheres. Energies are measured using brittle fracture and contact adhesion techniques. Both "virgin" and "healed" interfaces are investigated, with special attention on the latter. The fracture and adhesion data overlap, reflecting a common underlying separation process by "sharpcrack propagation." The study identifies several contributors to the interface adhesion … Show more

“…Visser [35] stated that humidity eliminates or greatly reduces the effect of electrical forces. This statement has been corroborated by Wan et al [36], who measured adhesive forces and surface charges for surfaces of mica and silica. High values of adhesion were observed during experiments in dry nitrogen when the relative humidity was between 1 and 2%.…”

“…As the humidity increases from 0 to 100%, the DMT adhesion force will take a value between F air DMT and F water DMT . To calculate the DMT adhesion force for the intermediate humidity, an approximation method by Wan et al (1992) is used. The work of adhesion E ad for the intermediate humidity can be expressed as…”

“…The Hamaker constant for the interaction of a solid interacting across vacuum (or a gas) with another solid is typically 5-10 times higher than the Hamaker constant for the interaction across liquid water . Therefore, as water condenses into the gap the van der Waals attraction is gradually reduced [147]. For a sphere interacting with a planar surface the van der Waals attraction decreases from (e.g.…”
