This article investigated the effect of moisture on the tensile strength and in‐plane shear of laminated composites. For this, the results of a composite system based on a new thermoplastic Elium® 150 resin were compared to a traditional epoxy resin result. Both composites were fabricated via VARTM using a 0/90° plain weave carbon fiber fabric. For the non‐conditioned specimens, the thermoplastic composites presented 30% more tensile resistance in comparison to epoxy composites. For conditioned specimens, this difference was 14%. These results were related to plasticization, which tends to favor the polymer softening providing a greater matrix plastic deformation, promoting a ductile fracture of the composite. On the other hand, the in‐plane shear properties were 30% higher for the thermosetting laminates for both conditions. In this case, moisture may have favored the formation of surface cracks and weakened the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. Additional analysis based on design of experiments has shown that the Elium® 150 resin significantly affects all responses and presented in fact a better behavior in comparison to Epoxy resin. While the conditioning effects have featured a statistically noticeable contribution to the tensile strength, the presence of the moisture did not provide a significant enhancement to the in‐plane shear strength. Besides that, the unknown fractographic aspects of the fracture surfaces of both composites were used as a complementary tool for the mechanical characterization. POLYM. ENG. The present work deals with a critical fractographic analysis into low carbon (0.18%-C) steel samples which were used for three different mechanical tests: tensile test; shear test; and toughness test. These mechanical tests were performed in standard sized specimens as recommended by ASTM. In each category of test, there were two different specimens with different physical states according to heat treated conditions. First specimen was in ‘as received’ condition and another was annealed. For annealing, sample was first heated up to austenitic temperature and inserted inside the sand for slow rate of cooling. As these two categories of samples were undergone through destructive tests, the variation in fracture behaviour of the samples was analysed by FESEM, XRD. A significant variation in fractographic images could be observed in different heat-treated samples. Micro-pores, dimples, cleavage facet, peaks, valleys, and cave formation were observed in the samples.

The surface modification of stainless-steel (SS) mesh was carried out by chemical etching for different time, and then, the etched SS meshes were used as the interlayer heating element for resistance welding of glass fabric-reinforced polyetherimide (GF/PEI) composite laminates. The hydrophobicity and tensile strength of the etched and untreated SS wires and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between SS wire and PEI resin were investigated by dynamic contact angle (DCA) analyzer and single fiber pull-out test to evaluate the influence of the degree of chemical etching on the bonding strength of PEI resin and SS surface. Tensile lap-shear strength (LSS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis were performed to investigate the welding interface strength and fracture morphologies of the resistance-welded joint of the GF/PEI laminates. The hydrophobicity and tensile strength of SS wires were increased and decreased respectively with etching time (t e ). The IFSS of SS wire/PEI resin showed an improvement with t e . The LSS was increased first and then decreased with t e , and the optimal t e was 30 min when LSS reached the maximum. Fracture analysis showed the main failure mode of the welded joints was the interlayer debonding when welding time (t w ) was insufficient. With the extension of t w , the failure mode gradually switched into the intralayer tearing of the SS implant.
