Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been extensively utilized in various industries. These artificial compounds pose significant environmental and health concerns as they exhibit persistence in soil over long periods and can migrate through soil and groundwater. One potential method for addressing PFASs toxicity is thermal desorption, although its efficacy in calcareous soil remains understudied. In this experimental investigation, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of thermal desorption in removing PFASs from two types of calcareous soil: spiked clay and sandy clay loam soil. PFASs were spiked into soil samples, which were subsequently freeze‐dried and homogenized. The samples underwent thermal desorption, followed by extraction and analysis of remaining PFASs concentrations using UPLC MS/MS. The study examined the impact of different temperatures, times, and soil types on PFASs removal. Results revealed that the removal fraction of PFASs increased with higher temperatures, although the specific effect varied depending on the soil type and the characteristics of the PFASs. Optimal PFASs removal occurred within the temperature range of 350 to 450°C, with a treatment time of 40 to 60 min. ANOVA analysis indicated a significant interaction between temperature and time, highlighting the influence of temperature on PFASs desorption. The correlation coefficient demonstrated a negative relationship between temperature and PFASs removal from the soil sample. This study successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of thermal desorption in removing PFASs from calcareous soils. The findings contribute to the development of effective strategies for mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with PFASs contamination in soil.

Biochar has been suggested as a soil supplement to improve soil fertility. The world is covered in microplastics (MPs). A pot greenhouse experiment was carried out to examine the effects of polystyrene (PS), sugarcane bagasse biochar (SBB), and their interactions (PS × SBB) on the CO2 emission and rice yield in a rice paddy calcareous soil. The largest CO2 emissions occurred 35–40 days following rice planting, which corresponds to the tillering stages of rice growth. Higher CO2 emissions were detected after SBB treatment. Our findings showed that applying PS increased CO2 emissions in our soil samples. Our research revealed that adding SBB can boosted the negative effects of PS in the soil. The co‐application of SBB and PS increased PS's stimulation of the CO2 emissions. We infer that PS‐SBB interactions have an impact on global warming potential, microbial community activity, and CO2 emissions. Both SBB rates resulted in a significant increase in biomass and rice grain. Our research indicates that PS has a detrimental effect on rice grain output and biomass, but that the addition of SBB can slightly lessen these effects.

Development of a Sensitive Method for Cadmium Determination in Fish Tissue and Drinking Water Samples by FAAS Using SQT In Situ Atom Trapping

A sensitive and robust trap method was developed for the determination of cadmium (Cd) by using a slotted quartz tube. Using this method at a sample suction rate of 7.4 mL/min for 4.0 min collection, a 1467-fold increase in sensitivity was obtained compared to the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method. Under the optimized conditions, a limit of detection of 0.075 ng mL −1 was obtained for the trap method. The interference effects of hydride-forming elements, transition metals, and some anions on the Cd signal were investigated. The developed method was evaluated by analyzing "Sewage Sludge-industrial origin (BCR no: 146R)", "NIST SRM 1640a Trace elements in natural water", and "DOLT: 5 Dogfish Liver". There was a good agreement between the certified and found values at the 95% confidence level. This method was applied successfully for the determination of Cd in drinking water and some fish tissue samples (liver, muscle, and gill) obtained from Mugla province.
