Fractional-Order PI Control of DFIG-Based Tidal Stream Turbine

Abstract: This study mainly investigates the current and speed control strategies of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), which is applied to a tidal stream turbine (TST). Indeed, DFIG using integer-order PI (IOPI) controller has been widely proposed in the applications with a similar system, especially in wind energy conversion system (WECS). However, these conventional controllers cannot deal with the problems caused by the parameter variations satisfactorily under complex and harsh operation conditions, and may e… Show more

“…The PV controller controls the PV source using any MPPT strategy already known 22‐25 . The wind farm controller controls the wind turbines using the proportional repartition of the powers 17 or can use any other algorithms available in the literature 26‐29 . Each wind turbine control system contains a level of slow dynamic control (power control) and a level of fast dynamic control (generator current control).…”

“…These components are described in Appendix A. For a more detailed understanding of how v mean , ∆v turbulence , and ∆v waves are used in calculating the time series of the tidal stream velocity, please see [2,34]. Please note that this study only accounts for the ambient turbulence.…”

“…The surface wave conditions used in this analysis are listed in Tables A2 and A3, with their probability densities [2]. JONSWAP spectrum is chosen for the surface waves, in accordance with [2,63], with a peak enhancement factor, γ = 3.3 [2,34].…”

“…Among the large number of control methods and techniques of electrical machines existing in the literature, that based on field orientation remains the most used and marketed due to its simplicity and efficiency. Among the most famous methods used to control the DFAG and have been widely used in renewable energies is direct torque control (DTC) [14], sliding mode control (SMC) [15], backstepping control [16], vector control [17], synergetic control [18], direct power control (DPC) [19], hybrid control [20], field-oriented control (FOC) [21], and high-order SMC strategy [22]. In Table 1, a comparison is made between the various existing methods that were applied to the DAPG-based wind turbine system, using criteria such as the degree of complexity, the ripple ratio, the dynamic response, etc.…”
