Fractional Magnetization Plateaus and Magnetic Order in the Shastry-Sutherland MagnetTmB4

Abstract: We investigate the phase diagram of TmB4, an Ising magnet on a frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice, by neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments. At low temperature we find Néel order at low field, ferrimagnetic order at high field, and an intermediate phase with magnetization plateaus at fractional values M/M_(sat)=1/7,1/8,1/9,... and spatial stripe structures. Using an effective S=1/2 model and its equivalent two-dimensional fermion gas we suggest that the magnetic properties of TmB4 are related to… Show more

“…These arise due to a diverse range of magnetic phases stabilized by a magnetic field across the family of compounds, including a ferrimagnetic state corresponding to M/M sat = 1 2 in ErB 4 [16], while TmB 4 has a complex striped structure consisting of regions of antiferromagnetic order, separated by ferromagnetic stripes 7 or 9 units cells apart corresponding to M/M sat = 1 7 and 1 9 , respectively. An additional plateau at M/M sat = 1 2 arises due to equally sized antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic stripes [17].…”

“…The metallic RB 4 (R = Ho,Er,Tm,Tb) compounds order AF with period-doubling Néel ground states with Ising-like moments oriented perpendicular to the SSL planes [13][14][15][16]. In metallic The neutron diffraction measurements presented here demonstrate that the in-plane Ising-like Yb moments in Yb 2 Pt 2 Pb have a remarkably complex magnetic structure, with a commensurate superlattice of ordered stripes consisting of moment-bearing and magnetically compensated Yb pairs with moments perpendicular to the (110) and (−110) dimer bonds.…”

In metallic Yb 2 Pt 2 Pb, Yb moments form the orthogonal dimers of the SSL planes, and AF order appears below the Néel temperature T N = 2.07 K [17].…”
