Fractional CO2 Laser versus Fractional CO2 Laser Plus Betamethasone/Calcipotriol Ointment in the Treatment of Nail Psoriasis

Abstract: BACKGROUND Nail psoriasis has a major negative impact on the physical and psychological aspects of the patient's life. Treatment is often unsatisfactory because of the difficult penetration of the drug into the nail. OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of fractional CO 2 laser monotherapy versus combined fractional CO 2 laser and calcipotriol/betamethasone ointment preparation in treatment of nail psoriasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty patients with nail psoriasis with at least 2 affected fingernails were recrui… Show more

“…The results of our systematic literature review support the role of fractional laser treatment in the management of psoriasis while using topical medications. A total of 7 RCTs have been identified to date, out of which 4 were conducted as intra-patient studies [2,[10][11][12][13][14][15]. Despite the use of different topical medications and varying laser parameters across the studies, all of them have demonstrated a certain degree of reduction in NAPSI (although varying among the different studies).…”

“…After the fractional laser beam penetrates the epidermis, drugs can diffuse from the epidermis into the dermis, promoting the transdermal absorption of topical drugs such as glucocorticoids. This also eliminates the pain of drug injection and reduces the risk of pigmentation 10 . The fractional CO 2 laser has been clinically studied for keloid treatment.…”
