Fractal Characterization of Dynamic Fracture Network Extension in Porous Media

Abstract: Fracture network and fractured porous media as well as their transport properties have received great attentions in many fields from engineering application and basic theoretical researches. Fracture will dynamically extend in length and aperture to form complex fracture network under some external conditions such as percussion drilling, wave propagation, desiccation and hydrofracturing. The complexity of fracture network can be well quantitatively characterized by fractal dimension. In this work, the dynamic … Show more

“…As we discussed in above section, fractal dimension is one of most important parameters to quantitatively characterize the complexity of fractures. However, fractal dimension is sensitive to prediction methods, even some irrational values may be obtained (Roy et al, 2007;Cai et al, 2017).…”

“…Irregular fractals refer to randomly generated nonsmooth fractal objects that have statistical self-similarity. Porous media are a kind of irregular fractal object, the fractal research of which has been various [36][37][38][39][40].…”

“…However, what kind of distribution of remaining oil generally appears, and what kind of remaining oil has potential for exploitation, need to be further studied. Therefore, a thorough understanding of transport properties in porous materials and their dependence on pore geometry is critical (Cai et al, 2010;Wei et al, 2015;Cai et al, 2017a;Cai et al, 2017b). Several measurements of the oil cluster distribution have been performed in many papers.…”
