With the advent of the Navigation Satellites the Total Electron Content (TEC) has become one of the main parameters of the ionosphere. This is the result of a continuous TEC monitoring and rather dense network of GPS receivers. For Mexican region having no ionosondes the use of TEC for ionospheric conditions studies and monitoring has a special value. To study the behaviour of TEC and for its applied aspects two types of source-files are used worldwide: IONEX (global maps) and RINEX (local data) depending on the task solved. Magnetometer and satellite data from CHAMP and DMSP were involved in the analysis. First, benefits and limitations of TEC derived from both types of files are discussed in regard to the estimation of the ionosphere state in the Mexican region. Second, using both methods the specific features of diurnal, seasonal and annual patterns in TEC behaviour over Mexico were revealed, among which are the shift of the diurnal maximum to 14 LT, dependence on solar activity, high probability of night-time enhancements, presence of annual and winter anomalies. Third, it was revealed that the positive short-lived TEC enhancements are characteristic for Mexican region. They may occur even under quiet conditions. The answer is given what part of the ionosphere is responsible for TEC change during these positive disturbances. The results for Mexico were compared to the neighboring regions and SouthEast zone.

The Bering Sea meteor explosion that occurred on 18 December 2018 provides a good opportunity to study the ionospheric disturbances caused by meteor explosions. Total electron content (TEC) is the core parameter of ionospheric analysis. TEC and its changes can be accurately estimated based on the Global Positioning System (GPS). TID is detected in time and frequency domain based on power spectrum and Butterworth filtering method. By analyzing the waveform, period, wavelength, propagation speed and space-time distribution of TID, the location of the TID source is determined, and the process of TID formation and propagation is understood. The TID caused by meteor explosions has significant anisotropy characteristic. Two types of TID were found. For the first type, the average horizontal propagation velocity is 250.22 ± 5.98 m/s, the wavelength is ~135–240 km, the average period is about 12 min, and the propagation distance is less than 1400 km. About 8 min after the meteor explosion, the first type of TID source formed and propagated radially at the velocity of 250.22 ± 5.98 m/s. For the second type, the propagation velocity is ~434.02 m/s. According to the waveform, period, wavelength and propagation velocity of the TID, it is diagnosed to be the midscale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTID). Based on the characteristics of TID, we infer that the TID is excited by the gravity waves generated by the meteor explosion, which is in accordance with the propagation law of gravity waves in the ionosphere. And it is estimated that the average velocity of the up-going gravity waves is about 464.58 m/s. A simple model was established to explain the formation and the propagation of this TID, and to verify the characteristics of the TID propagation caused by nuclear explosion, earthquake, tsunami, and Chelyabinsk meteorite blast. It is estimated that the position of the TID source is consistent with the meteor explosion point, which further indicates that the TID is caused by the meteor explosion and propagates radially.

A transformada wavelet contínua constitui poderosa ferramenta para análise multiescala de dados. Ela tem amplas aplicações na Física, na Matemática, nas Ciências Naturais e, inclusive, grande apelo nas engenharias, computação eáreas de tecnologia e inovação. Do ponto de vista introdutório, a transformada wavelet tem sido abordada amplamente em trabalhos anteriores. Assim, esta apresentação dáênfase ao uso dessa técnica em situações teóricas e práticas que normalmente não são exploradas; porém fundamentais para um uso mais adequado, ou mesmo correto, dessa ferramenta. Um embasamento consistente possibilita, sobretudo, uma extensão de sua aplicação para novas pesquisas, facilitadas pela disponibilidade de programas e ferramentas gratuitas e, até, várias dessas sob a forma de recursos de livre distribuição (free softwares). Por critério de escolha dos autores, apresentam-se, neste artigo, conceitos e exemplos de técnicas que podem ser de grande interesse para vários tipos de estudos na Física e em outrasáreas correlatas. Este texto destina-se a pesquisadores, professores e estudantes de pós-graduação, com a possibilidade de atender ainda necessidades de estudantes dosúltimos anos de graduação. Palavras-chave: wavelet, sinais multiescala, análise de sinais.The continuous wavelet transform is a powerful tool for multiscale data analysis. It has wide applications in physics, mathematics, natural sciences and even great appeal in engineering, computing and areas of technology and innovation. As an introductory point of view, the wavelet transform has been widely addressed in previous works. Thus, this presentation emphasizes the use of this technique in theoretical and practical situations that are not usually explored, but situations that are fundamental to a better use, or even a correct use, of this tool. Consistent bases enable mainly extensions of wavelet application to new investigations, that are facilitated by the availability of free programs and tools, and even several of these in completely available distribution of resources (free softwares). The content of this article, by the authors' choice criteria, presents concepts and examples of techniques that can be of great interest for various studies in physics and other related areas. This text is aimed at researchers, teachers and graduate students, with the possibility of still meet the preparation needs of students at last undergraduation stage.
