FPGAs in Industrial Control Applications

Abstract: -The aim of this paper is to review the state of the art of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technologies and their contribution in industrial control applications. Authors start by addressing various research fields where FPGAs are useful. The features of these devices are then presented followed by their corresponding design tools. To illustrate the benefit of using FPGAs in the case of complex control applications, a sensorless motor controller has been treated. This controller is based on the Extended … Show more

“…FPGAs have an inherently parallel structure and can execute all their tasks simultaneously by hardware implementation of the design [33]. This characteristic can lead to a drastic reduction in execution time [34]. Moreover, processing at logic level enables real-time monitoring and immediate compensation, which is essential in fault-tolerant applications.…”

“…FPGA allows fast and accurate sampling intervals; thus, high control rate can be achieved [19]. Hence, FPGAs have been recognized as a suitable solution within bilateral teleoperation design [20] [21].…”

“…FPGAs [16] basically contain an array of logic elements or cells (each cell containing look-up tables and registers), whose interconnections are decided by the contents of a random access memory (RAM). The FPGA design, typically using hardware description languages, decides the final circuit structure to achieve a desired functionality and it is therefore said to be hardware programmable.…”
