Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance study of the gas-phase acidities of germane and methylgermane; Bond dissociation energy of germane

Abstract: An accurate gas-phase acidity for germane (enthalpy scale, equivalent to the proton affinity of GeH3 (-)), ΔH acid (o)(GeH4) = 1502.0 ± 5.1 kJ mol(-1), is obtained by constructing a consistent acidity ladder between GeH4, and H2S by using Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance spectrometry, and 0 and 298.15 K values for the first bond dissociation energy of GeH4 are proposed: D0 (o)(H3Ge-H) = 352 ± 9 kJ mol(-1); D (o)(H3Ge-H) = 358 ± 9 kJ mol(-1), respectively. These results are compared with experimental a… Show more

“…Proton Affinity and Electron Affinity of GeX 3 - (X = H, F, OH). The gas-phase proton affinity of GeH 3 - has only been established in recent years by a series of bracketing experiments leading to a value of 1502 ± 5.1 kJ mol -1 at 298 K .…”

“…The present paper, which reports the completion of the series, examines the effects of protonation and deprotonation on BLs and BDEs of the third-row elements. Motivation for our additional computations is provided by recent experimental studies of the gas-phase basicities and acidities of small arsines, closely related experimental measurements on germane and methyl germane, and accurate theoretical studies of the thermochemical properties of the third-row binary hydrides, GeH 4 , AsH 3 , SeH 2 , and HBr.…”

“…Although the thermochemistry of compounds containing third-row elements, especially the third-row hydrides, has received particular attention in recent years, information on the intrinsic basicities and acidities of these compounds is very scarce. Only recently have the experimental gas-phase acidities or basicities of GeH 4 , AsH 3 , SeH 2 , and HBr been reported in the literature. …”
