Introduction. Ageing of a paint layer is associated with various physical and chemical processes, in particular with polymerization and oxidation as the binders dry out, and also with chemical reactions when the binders react with the pigments, resulting in formation of new substances (compounds). Photoinduced changes in the binders and pigments, their chemical reactions during storage of the paintings (especially when the atmosphere is signifi cantly polluted), as well as mechanical damage to the paint and varnish layers are also possible. Study of processes associated with ageing of paintings is important for modern applied science. The corresponding results allow us to solve a number of practical problems such as restoration, determination of authenticity, and dating.Several experimental methods can be used to determine the composition of the paint layer in a painting. Optical spectroscopy is a useful tool in analysis of the molecular composition of samples (see, for example, [1,2]). The position and relative intensities of the spectral bands can be used to determine structural changes in the analyte molecules. Fourier transform-IR (FTIR) microspectroscopy is often used as a highly sensitive method, making it possible to work with micronsized samples [3]. Databases for IR spectra of paints and binders are available for interpretation of the experimental results [4,5]. Ageing causes changes in the molecular composition of the paint layers. Measurements of the spectroscopic parameters (line intensities and positions) probably can be used to determine the age of a painting. In fact, monotonic changes in the spectral lines of the oil after drying out have been demonstrated in [6]. However, polymerization and oxidation processes associated with ageing of the paint layer depend considerably on the environment (temperature, humidity, and composition of the atmosphere) and the illumination conditions. Thus identical spectral changes can be observed for paintings of different ages while the measured parameters can be quite different for two paintings of the same age.In order to solve this problem, after determining the time-dependent parameter for a set of paintings of different ages, we use statistical data processing methods. Then for an unknown painting, the parameter can be used to estimate the age. Abstract. Physical and chemical methods of analysis are indispensable for restoration, study of painting techniques, examination and attribution of works of art. Development of new directions of investigations as well as improvements in sample preparation allow applying non-destructive analysis methods, minimizing amount of matter used to obtain informative spectra, preventing alteration and destruction of samples in the course of investigation. This paper observes the examples of applying optical and spectral methods, including molecular spectral analysis and electron microscopy, for study of binding media and pigments of painting and archaeological artifacts.Preservation of cultural heritage, study and evaluation of their condition are the main purposes of restoration and research. Therefore, analysis of works of art is realized by means of non-destructive methods, including investigation in visible, infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray light as well as optical microscopy and XRF [1].The first stage of research involves non-sampling methods, for example, XRF and reflectance spectroscopy -which in some cases are the only possible way to examine works of art such as paper, fabrics, aquarelles and manuscripts. These methods provide the information regarding just the superficial layer. Applying them during investigation of K. Bryullov's drawings from "Italian Album" series apart from frequently used Prussian blue it was identified rare organic pigment Indian yellow (mixture of calcium and magnesium salt of euxantic acid). Indian yellow was used in Europe from late XVIII century till 1908 when its production was restricted [2]; it corresponds to period of the artist' life.Detailed information about multicomponent multilayer structures (painting, ceramics, archaeological objects etc.) can be obtained only by taking samples and their investigation by a combination of analytical methods. Thus, lead white in the form of unusually large tabular hexahedral crystals was discovered in pictures of K. Malevich by means of polarized light microscopy [3]. SEM-EDX method confirmed lead presence in crystals and determined their size (about 7 μm), and XRD showed that these crystals are composed of hydrocerussite (2PbCO3·Pb(OH)2).

Effect of multiplicative noise on stationary stochastic process

An open system that can be analyzed using the Langevin equation with multiplicative noise is considered. The stationary state of the system results from a balance of deterministic damping and random pumping simulated as noise with controlled periodicity. The dependence of statistical moments of the variable that characterizes the system on parameters of the problem is studied. A nontrivial decrease in the mean value of the main variable with an increase in noise stochasticity is revealed. Applications of the results in several physical, chemical, biological, and technical problems of natural and humanitarian sciences are discussed.
