Four-year observation of predictability and stability of small incision lenticule extraction

Abstract: BackgroundTo investigate long-term refractive outcomes, wavefront aberrations and quality of life after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for moderate to high myopia.MethodsA total of 26 patients (47 eyes) with preoperative mean spherical equivalent (SE) of -6.30 ± 1.47 diopters (D) who underwent SMILE were recruited. The measurements included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction, wavefront aberrations, and quality of life.ResultsAt 4… Show more

“…During a 4-year follow-up period, Burazovitch et al [12] found that 87% of eyes were within ±0.50 D of the intended correction in patients with high myopia. Moreover, in the study by Han et al [11], 89% of eyes were within ±0.50 D of the intended correction and 100% were within ±1.00 D. Similarly, Li et al [15] reported that 90% and 100% of eyes were within ±0.5 D and ±1.00 D of the intended correction, respectively, at 5 years after SMILE. Our findings were similar with the abovementioned studies.…”

“…SMILE showed excellent safety and efficacy for moderate-to-high myopia correction. Han et al [11] demonstrated that the UDVA was 20/20 or better in 92% of eyes at 4 years after SMILE, and the efficacy and safety indices were 1.07 ± 0.16 and 1.16 ± 0.14. Blum et al [10] reported the data from 56 eyes after SMILE during a 5-year follow-up period.…”

“…Han et al. () found that no eye lost any Snellen lines, and 9% of eyes showed an increase of two lines at 4 years after SMILE with a safety index of 1.16 ± 0.14. Our study likewise showed that no eyes lost two or more lines of CDVA, further demonstrating that the long‐term safety of SMILE is favourable and that both SMILE and FS‐LASIK are very safe.…”

“…Yusuf Yildirim et al [25] reported that 92% of high myopic eyes were within ± 0.50 D and that 100% of eyes were still within ± 1.00 D at the 2-year follow-up. Tian Han [26] reported that 89%…”
