Four new species of Cichlidogyrus (Monogenea, Ancyrocephalidae) from Sarotherodon mvogoi and Tylochromis sudanensis (Teleostei, Cichlidae) in Cameroon

Abstract: The four Cichlidogyrus species (Monogenea, Ancyrocephalidae) found on the gills of Sarotherodon mvogoi and Tylochromis sudanensis (Teleostei, Cichlidae) in Cameroon are considered new and are described herein. Cichlidogyrus mvogoi n. sp. from Sarotherodon mvogoi, characterised by a long (> 100 µm), thin and spirally coiled penis and a short marginal hook pair I. Cichlidogyrus sigmocirrus n. sp. from Tylochromis sudanensis, characterised by a short marginal hook pair I, a slightly spirally coiled penis with red… Show more

“…In addition, the dorsal bar auricles in C. aspiralis n. sp. have small hollow outgrowths on the anterior face, a feature observed in congeners infecting representatives of Tylochromis Regan, 1920, such as the Tanganyikan C. mulimbwai and C. muzumanii , both parasites of T. polylepis [ 41 ] (see above), and the non-Tanganyikan C. chrysopiformis , C. djietoi and C. sigmocirrus Pariselle, Bitja Nyom & Bilong Bilong, 2014 from T. sudanensis Daget, 1945 [ 46 ], C. kothiasi Pariselle & Euzet, 1994 from T. jentinki (Steindachner, 1862) [ 51 ], and also C. dageti , C . euzeti and C. falcifer found on Hemichromis fasciatus Peters, 1857 [ 48 ].…”

“…Species of this gill parasite are highly host specific, often only infecting a single host species (Pariselle & Euzet, ). To date, 95 species have been described (Pariselle & Euzet, ; Vanhove, Volckaert & Pariselle, ; Gillardin et al ., ; Muterezi Bukinga et al ., ; Pariselle, Bitja Nyom & Bilong Bilong, , ; Řehulková, Mendlová & Šimková, ; Pariselle et al ., , in press). Cichlidogyrus species occur at high prevalence and exhibit high infection intensities (Paperna, ).…”

“…Currently, 13 monogenean genera are known to infect cichlid species and six of these have been observed on African representatives36. Cichlidogyrus (Monopisthocotylea, Dactylogyridae) is the most species rich, with 102 representatives recorded from 88 different host species10111213141518373839404142. This genus displays variation in host-specificity and contains generalist but also strictly specialist species3943.…”
