In this paper, we analyse patients’ perspectives on the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic systems in healthcare. Based on citizens’ experiences when hospitalised for COVID-19, we explore how the opinions and concerns regarding healthcare automation could not be disassociated from a context of high pressure on the health system and lack of resources, and a political discourse on AI and robotics; a situation intensified by the pandemic. Thus, through the analysis of a set of interviews, a series of issues are identified that revolve around the following: the empirical effects of imagined robots, the vivid experience of citizens with the care crisis, the discomfort of the ineffective, the virtualised care assemblages, the human-based face-to-face relationships, and the automatisation of healthcare tasks. In light of these results, we show the variability in patients’ perspectives on AI and robotic systems and explain it by distinguishing two interpretive repertoires that account for different views and opinions: a well-being repertoire and a responsibility repertoire. Both interpretative repertoires are relevant in order to grasp the complexity of citizens’ approaches to automatisation of healthcare. Attending to both allows us to move beyond the dominant (political) discourse of technology markets as the only way to respond to healthcare challenges. Thus, we can analyse and integrate patients’ perspectives to develop AI and robotic systems in healthcare to serve citizens’ needs and collective well-being.

Context: France has undergone major changes in social policy that made an impact on the health-care sector. The paper reminds readers of the application and shortcomings of the concept of New Public Management (NPM) in the French health system. Problem: The paper investigates NPM health reforms in France. Reforms aimed at containing costs. What administrative restructuring was implemented? What were reform idiosyncrasies? What were their limitations? Which critical public health emergencies remain? Methods: We examine the political and economic context of health-care reforms, the rise of the regulatory state, and its core element: the diagnostic-related group (DRG) scale. We critically examine the recentralization of health policy decisions and its impact on care providers and provide an international perspective on reforms. Results: Reforms put priority on the use of yardsticks and also emphasized regulation and competition but rejected public-private partnerships on the Anglo-Saxon model. Central health authorities regain their authority over health policy decisions, and decentralization was weakened. Conclusion:Restrictions in public service delivery triggered a general discontent among the population. The political repercussions of reforms eventually crystallized into the Yellow Vest movement.

Resumo O objetivo do texto é apresentar o livro Il faut s’adapter: sur un nouvel impératif politique, de Barbara Stiegler. Na obra, a autora desenvolve uma genealogia crítica do neoliberalismo considerando as fontes evolucionistas que embasam o pensamento político de Walter Lippmann e de John Dewey. Desse modo, a partir da constatação de uma lacuna na genealogia do neoliberalismo apresentada por Michel Foucault em Nascimento da biopolítica, Stiegler procura mostrar as bases naturalistas que informam o debate norte-americano nos anos imediatamente anteriores à formulação teórica do neoliberalismo. O livro aborda as concepções opostas dos autores estadunidenses quanto à democracia, ao “novo liberalismo” e à ideia de atraso da espécie humana em relação à aceleração da sociedade industrial do início do século XX. Ao evidenciar o embate entre os autores, Stiegler argumenta que o pragmatismo de Dewey se apresenta como a primeira crítica política e filosófica do neoliberalismo vindouro. Analisando Il faut s’adapter também à luz do contexto em que o livro se inscreve, a resenha pretende mostrar como a obra constitui uma contribuição relevante para a pesquisa sociológica sobre o neoliberalismo, especialmente para os estudos foucaultianos sobre o tema.
