“…First, as is the case of a suite of most aerial insectivores in the Family Hirundinidae (Nebel et al , Fraser et al ), eastern purple martin populations are declining rangewide among 28 states and Canadian provinces (1966–2014; −1.1%/yr [4.3, −0.6]; Sauer et al ). Second, current housing is mainly provided by older generations, and recent data suggest decreasing interest in active participation in natural resources management among younger generations and new human demographics, including minorities (Taylor , Lopez et al ), individuals <40 years old (Ray ), and individuals who are more urban‐centric (Braun et al ). Project MartinWatch (PMW), a citizen science project overseen by the Purple Martin Conservation Association (PMCA; Erie, PA, USA), provides a database of nest check records from “landlords” across eastern North America that monitor nesting activity in provisioned housing for eastern purple martins.…”
