Fossil localities in Torlesse rocks of the North Island, New Zealand

Abstract: Data on 110 fossil localities in Torlesse rocks of the North Island of New Zealand are tabulated, and the distribution of localities shown on maps. Zones are fewer and less well defined than in the South Island. The Permian is particularly fossiliferous, but no Kaihikuan (Ladinian) fossils are known. Much of the Torlesse might be Late Jurassic except for anticlinal cores, possibly in part faulted, of Permian, Late Triassic, and Early Jurassic.Although tectonic mobility is demonstrated by the occurrence of deri… Show more

“…It occurs as massive shellbeds and as solitary specimens in the shallow-water Murihiku Supergroup (Campbell & Coombs 1966) in south-west Auckland and Southland. It has been found at three localities in Canterbury Suite rocks near Taneatua, Bay of Plenty (Fleming 1953;Speden 1976), North Isl'and, and also occurs in New Caledonia (Lillie & Brothers 1970). This is the first record of the taxon in the Canterbury Suite of the South Island.…”

“…Speden (1976), in a recent comprehensive account of fossil localities in Torlesse rocks (generafly referred to as Torlesse Supergroup that includes the Ruahine Greywacke Group), mentions that "invertebrate fossil localities are known over a large area from near Lake Waikaremoana (N96) to the south end of the Ruahine Range (N140)". Speden (1976, fig. 1 Stevens 1963).…”
