Nine species belonging to six dicotyledonous families have been described here from an assemblage of petrified woods collected from the Mio-Pliocene of Namsang beds near Deomali. They are Sterculioxylon varmahii sp. nov., Heritieroxylon arunachalensis gen. et sp. nov. of Sterculiaceae; Burseroxylon garugoides sp. nov. of Burseraceae; Mangiferoxylon assamicum Prakash & Tripathi of Anacardiaceae; Albizinium eolebbekianum Prakash and Millettioxylon palaeopulchra sp. nov. of Leguminosae; Lagerstroemioxylon deomaliensis sp. nov. of Lythraceae; and Laurinoxylon namsangensis sp. nov. and L. deomafiensis sp. nov. of Lauraceae. Modern comparable forms of these fossils still occur in and around the tropical evergreen to deciduous forests of Arunachal Pradesh, indicating the continuation of somewhat similar kind of vegetation and climatic conditions in this region from the Neogene to the present day.

Out of 23 species of Dipterocarpoxylon known so far from India and abroad (Awasthi, 1974a(Awasthi, , b, 1980Prakash, 1975Prakash, ,1978Prakash, ,1981Lemoigne, 1978;Ghosh & Roy, 1979;Trivedi & Ahuja, 1980) the present fossil shows closest similarity in all its anatomical characters with Dipterocarpoxy-Ion pondicherriense Awasthi (l974a) described from the Cuddalore Series near Pondicherry. The only difference between the two is that the frequency of gum canals seems to be relatively more in the present fossil than in D. pondicherriense.…”

Fossil woods resembling the modern genera Dipterocarpus Gaertn. L, Sterculia Linn., Terminalia Linn. and a species of Palmoxylon Schenk are described from the probable Pliocene (Kankawati Series) beds of district Kachchh, Gujarat. They represent the families Dipterocarpaceae, Sterculiaceae, Combretaceae and Palmae respectively. The modern comparable forms of the fossil species indicate a more humid climate at the time of deposition contrary to the present-day arid conditions in Kachchh.

“…Prakash and Dayal (1964) instituted the genus Elaeocarpoxylon to accommodate the woods of Elaeocarpus L. and Slonea L. So far, five species of the genus, viz. E. antiquum Prakash and Dayal (1964), E. mandlaensis Lakhanpal et al (1978) E. mohgaoense Trivedi and Srivastava (1980), E. ghughuensis Awasthi et al (1996) and E. nawargaonensis Khare et al (2000) are described from the Deccan Intertrappean beds of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. One of its species, E. hailakandiensis is reported from the Neogene deposits of Tipam Sandstone, Assam (Prakash & Tripathi, 1975).…”

Anatomical details of three well preserved dicotyledonous woods resembling extant genera, viz. Dracontomelon Bl. (syn. Dracontomelum Bl.) of the family Anacardiaceae, Elaeocarpus Linn. of the Elaeocarpaceae, Euphoria Comm. ex Juss. - Litchi chinensis Sonn. - Otonephalium Radlk. (anatomically indistinguishable) of the Sapindaceae have been described from the Deccan Intertrappean sediments of Ghansor, Seoni District, Madhya Pradesh. The assemblage indicates occurrence of thick tropical vegetation at the time of deposition. These genera are presently found in natural association and are distributed in tropical wet-evergreen forests of Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Assam, Sikkim, Bangladesh and Myanmar etc. Their presence signifies that the climate was tropical with plenty of rainfall during the period of deposition.
