Forty mouse strain survey of voluntary calcium intake, blood calcium, and bone mineral content

Abstract: We measured voluntary calcium intake, blood calcium, and bone mineral content of male and female mice from 40 inbred strains. Calcium intakes were assessed using 48-h two-bottle tests with a choice between water and one of the following: water, 7.5, 25, and 75 mM CaCl 2 , then 7.5, 25, and 75 mM calcium lactate (CaLa). Intakes were affected by strain, sex, anion, and concentration. In 11 strains females consumed more calcium than did males and in the remaining 29 strains there were no sex differences. Nine str… Show more

“…For example, out of a total of 40 mouse strains, 32 had no sex difference in sodium preference and 29 had no sex difference in calcium preference (82,85,86). Thus, sex differences in taste preferences are the exception rather than the rule in our laboratory.…”

“…Fig. 9 and 10)-There are 28-and 40-strain surveys of calcium preferences in mice (5,85), but the only previous rat strain comparisons of calcium preferences are confined to the WKY and SHR strains (24,80), and there is no work in either species on magnesium preferences. As was the case with the monovalent chlorides, some strains showed an inverted U-shaped concentration-preference function in response to CaCl 2 and MgCl 2 .…”

“…No 100000; [9]]. After 6-10 days to habituate to laboratory conditions, all the mice received a series of 13 48-h two-bottle preference tests as part of other experiments [see [31,33]]. They also had a 40-µl sample of blood collected after excision of the tip of the tail [all procedures are described in detail elsewhere [30]].…”

“…The second strain screen involved 10 males and 10 females of 40 strains [62,92,93]. The 40 strains form the core of the Mouse Phenome Project (MPD), which is an ambitious attempt to populate a database with phenotype information about inbred strains.…”
