“…The studies were conducted in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark, and Italy; all studies were single-center studies. Seven studies were conducted in healthy, free-living participants (4,6,7,12,13,15,17); one study focused on elderly women who were residents of a nursing home and were deficient in vitamin D (5), whereas another study instead focused on hospital inpatients who had been diagnosed with a hip fracture and were vitamin D deficient (16). The final study recruited participants who were under the care of a rheumatology outpatient clinic (diagnosis unspecified) and were vitamin D insufficient (14).…”

“…Only 4 studies used a control or placebo group to compare against intervention groups (4,6,7,13), and of those, only 3 studies implemented double blinding of the intervention (4, 6, 7). Of the 6 studies that chose not to compare intervention groups against a control group (5, 12, 14-17), 3 studies were double blind to the intervention (12,15,16).…”

“…Moreover, few foods contain vitamin D in noteworthy concentrations; those that do are fish-liver oils, fatty fish and egg yolk. Furthermore, there is a wide variety of foods fortified with vitamin D across the world (Calvo et al, 2005), that is, dairy products, bread, and recently, orange juice (Biancuzzo et al, 2010;Holick et al, 1992;Natri et al, 2006). Naturally, the vitamin D 2 content of cultivated mushrooms is almost nil (o0.1 mg/100 g fresh weight) yet they are very rich in ergosterol (Jasinghe and Perera, 2005;Mattila et al, 2002).…”

“…Vitamin D (D2, D3, or both) deficiency is an international health concern that has been associated with rickets, osteomalacia, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, and an increased risk of wheezing diseases, autoimmune diseases (eg, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohns disease), and cancer, such as of the prostate, breast, and colon [10]. Vitamin D has been demonstrated as having potential immunomodulatory activity; vitamin D analogues are effective in the treatment of psoriasis [11].…”
