Formulation for Complete and Accurate Calibration of Six-Port Reflectometer

The circuit and network analysis of some signal separation structures constituting a microwave six-port reflectometer are presented. An interconnection of five of these structures composing a six-port network analyzer is also presented. In order to validate the responses, a circuit analysis following the signals from source to detectors, is performed. The complete structure constituting the six-port network analyzer is composed by a 6 dB directional coupler, a four stage 3 dB Wilkinson power divider and three quadrature couplers providing 3 dB, which are formed by two 8.34 dB tandem couplers.

A compact multi-port reflectometer using a new subtractive mixing scheme for the determination of reflection coefficients in the frequency range 1-10 GHz is proposed. Compared to classical multi-port reflectometers, the architecture proposed reduces the design complexity. Comparison between experimental results obtained from the proposed reflectometer and those given by a conventional network analyzer is given.

Abstract-This paper presents a one decade low-cost forward network analyzer based on a modified six-port technique. An instrumentation integrating the hardware and software resources offering advantages such as robustness and compactness is developed. The microwave part of the system is fabricated in planar technology. Associated to this system, a one-step calibration procedure is implemented on an 8-bits microcontroller. The performance, in term of measurement accuracy, is evaluated by comparing the results obtained from the system proposed to those given by a conventional network analyzer in the frequency band 1-10 GHz.
