Formulation and Evaluation of Floating Tablets of Cefpodoxime Proxetil

Abstract: In present investigation, an attempt was made to develop gastro retentive tablets of cefpodoxime proxetil (CP) using locust bean gum as release retarded material. CP is an orally administered, extended spectrum, semi-synthetic antibiotic of cephalosporin class. CP has a short elimination half-life and also possesses high solubility, chemical, enzymatic stability and absorption profiles in acidic pH which makes CP suitable candidate for formulating it as gastro retentive dosage form for improved bioavailability… Show more

“…Evaluation tests such as weight variation, thickness, hardness, friability, assay/drug content, and buoyancy/floating tests were performed. By application of floating CP tablet exposed to 40 ºC in a hot air oven for evaporation of menthol, in-vitro dissolution was conducted for the prepared tablets [1,13,14].…”

“…These systems can be utilized to achieve either local or systemic effects. Osmotic pressure-activated drug delivery systems, which represent a novel generation of pharmaceuticals, have obtained regulatory approval for commercialization owing to their clinical benefits in comparison to sustainedrelease and quick-release products [1,2].…”

“…Previously we reported the use of different polymers like methyl cellulose, Kollidon SR, HPMC for sustained release dosage form design [4,5] while other researchers mentioned the use of PVP-K30 and Locust bean gum as a rate retardant in floating drug delivery [6]. The present investigation was focused to develop Atorvastatin Calcium sustained release tablet to evaluate the effect of polymer Carbomer-974 and Hypromellose-15000 cps on drug release behavior from the prepared formulations.…”

“…Gum karaya (GK), also called as Sterculia gum, is the dried exudation of the Sterculia urens tree and other species of Sterculia, which belong to the family Sterculiaceae [5,6]. GK is a negative colloid and a high-molecular-mass complex acidic polysaccharide.…”
