Formulation and Evaluation of a New Biodegradable Periodontal Chip Containing Thymoquinone in a Chitosan Base for the Management of Chronic Periodontitis

Abstract: Objective. This study was performed to develop a biodegradable periodontal chip containing thymoquinone and to evaluate its effectiveness for managing chronic periodontitis.Methods.Chips were formulated from thymoquinone and chitosan. Twelve patients with periodontal pockets measuring ≥5 mm participated in this study. Overall, 180 periodontal pockets were evaluated. At day zero, all patients were treated with full-mouth scaling and root planning. Periodontal pockets were divided into three groups. Group one ser… Show more

“…Thymoquinone (TQ) is the major ingredient in N. sativa seed essential oil, which has been proved to have broad medical benefits [ 43 , 44 , 45 ]. In addition, N. sativa seed extract has been tested recently in the dental field for a potential therapeutic effect against dental caries [ 46 ], pulpal diseases [ 47 ], gingival and periodontal diseases [ 48 ], and oral ulcerations [ 49 ].…”

“…12 Also, in recent times, considerable research has been done on using various types of plant extracts such as Azadirachta indica, Salvadore persica, and Nigella sativa in dentistry. [13][14][15] N. sativa contains thymoquinone having antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and could reduce dental caries and prevent periodontal and gingival diseases. 16 The bioceramics have certain abrasivity and it needed to be evaluated to prevent the wear of hard tissues, that is, enamel and dentin.…”

“…In addition to poor solubility, thermal‐ and light‐sensitive nature of TQ causes stability problems . To overcome these limitations, different drug delivery systems such as liposomes, and niosomes, as well as poly(lactic‐ co ‐glycolic acid) (PLGA), chitosan, or cyclodextrin nanoparticles have been used.…”
