Formulation and Characterization of Anthocyanins-Loaded Nanoparticles

Abstract: The pH-sensitive polymer together with the hydrophilic polymer showed to be suitable as ACNs delivery system. The delayed release profile of ACNs, observed for all formulations, can enhance their poor bioavailability. Nevertheless, ACNs bioavailability in vivo remains to be studied.

“…The bioavailability of anthocyanins have been linked to maintenance of good health through reducing the cellular lipid peroxidation, and its strong anti-oxidant activity. Nonetheless, the anthocyanins, especially the most abundant, cyanidin-3-O-β-glucoside, has provided low bioavailability in pharmacokinetic studies [238,239], and studies have been devised to further substantiate, and increase the bioavailability of the anthocyanins through various formulation strategies, also involving nano-encapsulation [240]. Matter of the fact, recent studies have shown that the anthocyanins are more bioavailable than previously presumed.…”

“…Since the bioavailability is still considered the Achilles’ heel of anthocyanins, numerous researchers have been focused on developing new approaches to improve the bioavailability and stability of these natural compounds [ 63 , 64 , 65 ]. Actually, the formulation and encapsulation of anthocyanins have been recognized as valuable strategies to overcome their bioavailability limitations by improving the control of anthocyanins release (time and location) and their protection from environmental conditions and from other food elements, decreasing their degradation rate and increasing their half-life [ 66 ].…”

“…Based on results, pH-sensitive polymer along with the hydrophilic polymer exhibited suitable delivery system for anthocyanins. The anthocyanins delayed release profile, found in all formulations, can improve their poor bioavailability (Dupeyrón et al, 2017). Polymer-based nanoparticles are of other approaches to enhance the bioavailability of unstable hydrophilic drugs like anthocyanins.…”
