Exploiting medicinal plants on rangelands is a climate-sensitive strategy in Iran. In other words, there is an urgent need for the transition toward resilience under current climatic pressures and risks. In addition, a deep understanding about awareness, risk perceptions, and adaptation strategies of different rural groups can play a significant role in the mitigation of climate change impacts and the development of the adaptation capacity. Therefore, the development of a conceptual model for adaptation to climate variability in rangelands was determined as the main purpose of the present study. To this end, we used analysis of awareness, risk perceptions, and adaptation strategies of medicinal plant exploiters toward climate variability. This research was carried out in Sought Khorasan province of Iran, which is one of the climate-sensitive and leading areas for the exploitation of medicinal plants in the country. Required data for this study were gathered through 13 focus group discussions. The number of members of these focus groups was between 4 and 12 people. The total number of participants in the focus groups was 91 medicinal plant exploiters. The results revealed that exploiters have a relatively favorable awareness of the current climate situation. However, they perceived huge constraints in financial supports and resources which lead to increasing social conflicts, decreasing social relations, leaving the job, increasing migration, unemployment, and psychological impacts. As expected, various adaptation strategies were used aiming at conserving, developing, improving, and managing income resources, but many of them are short of resilience orientation. Finally, research findings were articulated in the form of a conceptual model and some practical recommendations were presented to enhance adaptation of rangelands' exploiters.

Due to the severe effects of climate change on the agricultural sector, urgent action is required on the part of farmers and is, indeed, critical to reducing climate change impacts. However, reports globally revealed farmers’ engagement in climate change adaptation is still insufficient, ambivalent, and inconsistent and farmers do not consider adaptation to be urgent. Researchers have argued that this issue is rooted in psychological biases beside other factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate how psychological distance determines climate change beliefs, risk perception and adaptation strategies among Iranian farmers. A cross-sectional paper-based survey was conducted in the Dasht-e Azadegan county of Khuzestan province in southwest Iran. The study sample consisted of 250 farmers selected through a multi-stage random sampling process. An expert panel review and a pilot study were conducted to confirm convergent validity and reliability of the scales. The results confirm that all four dimensions of psychological distance influence water management adaptation strategies and non-farm activities. Moreover, all psychological dimensions, except the temporal dimension, affect adaptation in farming management. Thus, making climate change more proximal to decision makers could be a strategic way of encouraging individuals to take adaptive actions. This study emphasizes that concepts of psychological distance can be applied to help organizations (e.g., agriculture extension services) to understand farmers’ risk perceptions and responses to climate change impacts and improve risk communication to better engage farmers in climate action.

Agriculture faces unprecedented abiotic and biotic stressors due to climate change and environmental contamination. This consequence serves as a severe warning to our society and a challenge to balance sustainable production with rapid population growth. However, prior studies have not explored how pollution and climate change affect agricultural sustainability individually, particularly in Asia. To do so, we examined the analytical linkages between environmental degradation, climate change, governance, and agriculture in Asian countries. To quantify the long-term estimates, the study employs a fresh econometric approach, such as the generalized method of moments and quantile regression, to test the robustness of all diagnostic checks, notably with the contemplation of outliers performed. The results of panel cointegration tests confirm the long-term interactions between sustainable agriculture and its determinants. Besides this, it is inferred that governance quality, agricultural land, fertilizers, and stock led to increased agricultural production, whereas carbon emissions and temperature change hurt agricultural performance. Moreover, it is asserted that all predictors have a significant predictive capacity for both measures of agricultural sustainability. These findings are the foundation for a comprehensive set of policies designed to achieve Sustainable Development Agenda 2, 8, and 13 through agricultural sustainability.
