“…In contemporary Russia, family farming is not the prevalent form of agricultural production. Large‐scale agriculture—established with the state and collective farms (sovkhozes and kolkhozes) in Soviet times—persisted despite market reforms (Moser ; Nikulin ). While enterprises often changed hands and juridical forms, large‐scale agriculture remained prevalent: some successor enterprises of former Soviet farms persisted, others were bought up and incorporated into even larger companies, but also many private farms (misleadingly labelled “peasant farms” in official statistics) grew to the size of several thousand hectares, some outgrowing the former kolkhozes (Wegren ).…”
