Forming Sticky Droplets from Slippery Polymer Zwitterions

Abstract: Polymer zwitterions are generally regarded as hydrophilic and repellant or "slippery" materials. Here, a case is described in which the polymer zwitterion structure is tailored to decrease water solubility, stabilize emulsion droplets, and promote interdroplet adhesion. Harnessing the upper critical solution temperature of sulfonium- and ammonium-based polymer zwitterions in water, adhesive droplets are prepared by adding organic solvent to an aqueous polymer solution at elevated temperature, followed by agita… Show more

“…Accordingly, polymers with all-carbon backbones are preferred, avoiding the risk of backbone hydrolysis [15,16,17]. For such vinyl and vinylidene polymers, it is generally assumed that polymers connecting the functional side groups by ester moieties to the backbone (such as poly((meth)acrylates)) are considerably more sensitive to hydrolysis than analogs bearing amide moieties (such as poly((meth)acrylamides)), and much more than derivatives of polystyrene or poly(diallylammonium) compounds [18,19,20,21]. Also, it is generally accepted that hydrolysis is accelerated by increasing temperature, as well as by acidic or basic conditions.…”

“…With this technique, droplets can be generated with predictable sizes and compositions. Experiment performed in microfluidic device for the fabrication of zwitterion structure droplets has been reported by Emrick and co‐workers (Figure C) . In this work, they used a device which consists of two T‐shaped junctions and a Y‐junction.…”
